Ward 7 High School Council

Applications are now open for the 2026-2027 Ward 7 High School Council. Selected students will have the opportunity to learn how city government works, meet with city leaders, collaborate with other student leaders from across Ward 7, and develop recommendations to improve our community.

Requirements

We know that students are very busy, particularly student leaders. We have designed the program to be a reasonable commitment, even for busy students, while still ensuring it is meaningful enough to provide a worthwhile experience. The requirements for students admitted into the program are as follows:

  1. Kickoff retreat - Saturday, September 12, 9am-noon [no pre-work required]

  2. City leadership sessions - 5pm-6pm on Weds 10/21, 10/28, 11/04, 11/11, 11/18, and 12/02 [no pre-work required]

  3. Planning meetings - 5pm-6pm on Weds 01/06, 02/03, 03/03, and 04/07 [participants are also likely to connect with each other and do asynchronous work outside of these planning meetings between January and April]

  4. Final presentations and celebration - To be scheduled sometime in May

Because each meeting builds on the previous one, students are expected to attend all sessions whenever possible. Participants who miss more than two meetings may be dismissed from the program.

  • Applications are due no later than August 30.

  • Students should complete the application themselves, please. Parents, guardians, teachers, or others should not complete the application on behalf of students.

Because space is limited, and not every applicant will be selected. Put your best foot forward when applying!

Tips for preparing your application:

  • Please note that the application does require the name, phone number, and email address of a community leader (separate from a family member) who can serve as a reference for you. You should ask a teacher, coach, principal, church leader, or other community leader if he or she will be willing to serve as your reference before you complete the application. If he or she says yes, be sure to ask them the phone number and email address they wish you include on the application.

  • Plan ahead! Consider who your reference will be, and ask him or her early, so that you will have time to complete the application by the August 30 deadline.

  • The application also requires two open-response questions, listed below. Your answers to these questions should be at least a paragraph long. Please be sure to review your responses for spelling or grammatical errors before submitting.

    • Why do you wish to be a part of the Ward 7 High School Council?

    • Why would you be a good fit for the Ward 7 High School Council? Please describe your accomplishments, leadership experience, community involvement, or any other qualities you feel are relevant.

  • You should also have your own contact information, and the contact information of your parent(s) / guardian(s) handy when you complete the application.

  • You may use artificial intelligence (such as ChatGPT) to proofread or improve the clarity of your writing (optional). However, your responses should reflect your own ideas and experiences. The use of artificial intelligence to generate your answers is not permitted.
